Subject: Nicotine addiction

Here’s a great mystery of life: Every person who smokes is familiar with all the health risks involved with smoking such as lung cancer and emphysema. Those people know that there are more than 4,000 chemical compounds in inhaled smoke. Yet these people tell themselves, that they like smoking and you don’t want to quit? Is that mysterious to you?

Actually, it’s not a mystery. It’s an addiction and it can be dealt with.

Why is called smoking an addiction? Quite simply, because it is one.

What causes nicotine addiction?
Nicotine is a drug - and it’s very addictive. Found in cigarettes, nicotine causes changes in the brain that make people want to use it more and more. Addictive drugs, such as nicotine, cause unpleasant withdrawal symptoms. The good feelings that result when an addictive drug is present — and the bad feelings when it’s absent — make breaking any addiction very difficult. Historically, nicotine addiction has been one of the hardest addictions to break. Cigarest has developed a program that has helped over 1 million people kick the smoking habit, and they can help you stop smoking now!

The Surgeon General’s Report, “Nicotine Addiction,” concluded that

  • Cigarettes and other forms of tobacco are addicting.
  • Nicotine is the drug that causes addiction.
  • Pharmacologic and behavioral characteristics that determine tobacco addiction are similar to those that determine addiction to drugs such as heroin and cocaine.

What else does nicotine do to the body?
